Woman dies after crashing car into Mountlake Terrace home

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A young woman died Monday morning after she veered off the road in Mountlake Terrace, crashing through a telephone pole, a fence and into a house.
The vehicle caught fire, and flames spread to the two-story home at 220th Street SW and 44th Avenue W, said Mountlake Terrace police Cmdr. Pat Lowe.
The woman, estimated to be in her 20s, died at the scene. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner will release her identity and cause of death.
A woman inside the house escaped without any significant injuries. She was taken to a hospital for smoke exposure as a precaution, said South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, but the house is uninhabitable, Hynes said. The Red Cross responded to assist the couple who live there.
The road was shut down as police and fire crews investigated the cause of the incident, and as Snohomish PUD workers fixed power lines. The Edmonds School District reported that bus routes could be affected for two nearby schools, Mountlake Terrace High School and Cedar Way Elementary.
According to Snohomish PUD spokesperson Aaron Swaney, the crash itself didn’t cause residents to lose power. The bottom of the pole was knocked out, but the top was still hanging from the wires.
The PUD had to shut off power, affecting about 400 customers, so crews could safely replace the pole. That was expected to be done by Monday evening.
