Hot Tickets: What to watch this week in prep sports

Five high school sports events to keep an eye on this week, barring inclement weather:

Boys basketball: Mariner at Glacier Peak, 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. This showdown for first place in Wesco 4A is the first of two pivotal regular-season matchups between these league-title contenders. Glacier Peak (11-0, 5-0 Wesco 4A) has outscored opponents by 28.5 points per game and Mariner (10-1, 5-0) is off to its best start since the 2007-08 season.

Boys swimming: Edmonds-Woodway vs. Shorecrest, 3 p.m. Thursday at Lynnwood Pool. At last year’s Class 3A Northwest District championships, Edmonds-Woodway finished ahead of runner-up Shorecrest to claim the team title. And with both teams having performed well this season, this Wesco South clash could be the prelude to another battle for district supremacy between these teams in February.

Girls basketball: Arlington at Edmonds-Woodway, 7:15 p.m. Thursday. This is the first of two key Wesco 3A/2A matchups on back-to-back nights for Arlington. The defending conference co-champion Eagles (8-2, 4-1 Wesco 3A/2A) have outscored opponents by 25 points per contest. Edmonds-Woodway (7-4, 5-0) has won seven straight games and is one of just two remaining unbeatens in the 15-team league.

Girls basketball: Archbishop Murphy at Arlington, 7:15 p.m. Friday. One night after facing Edmonds-Woodway, Arlington hosts Archbishop Murphy (6-3, 4-0 Wesco 3A/2A) in another pivotal league clash against a conference unbeaten. These teams split the Wesco 3A/2A title last season.

Boys wrestling: Lake Stevens Invite, 11 a.m. Saturday at Cavelero Mid High School (Lake Stevens). Hosted by perennial power Lake Stevens, this talent-laden tournament features 12 teams that placed in the top 15 of their respective classifications at last year’s Mat Classic. Eight of last year’s top 15 4A state finishers are slated to compete, as well as defending 3A state champion Mt. Spokane.
