Great Plant Pick: Vitis vinifera “Purpurea”

What: Vitis vinefera “Purpurea” is a selection of the common wine grape. Its foliage starts green in the spring, then develops burgundy red tones as summer progresses. Deep purple clusters of grapes hang from the leaves in late summer, but will nbot fully ripen in our climate. In fall, the fine is ablaze with saturated deep reds.
Where: “Purpurea” can be grown through trees and large shrubs, or on a trellis or arbor. It needs full sun, and prefers well-drained soil. No pruning is necessary, but light pruning in winter to control its growth is OK.
Size: Up to 30 feet.
Care: Occasional watering.
