Roundup: Snohomish grad tapped by USA softball as alternate

Sami Reynolds has advanced so far in her softball career that she’s now a part of the national team.

The Snohomish High School graduate, who’s currently a senior outfielder at the University of Washington, was selected by USA Softball as a replacement athlete for the U.S. team that will play at the 2022 World Games in July in Birmingham, Alabama.

Reynolds was one of 45 players invited to attend the selection trials, which were held Jan. 1-6 in Vero Beach, Florida. Fifteen players were selected to the final roster, with three others chosen as replacement athletes. This is Reynolds’ first time being a part of the national team.

Reynolds is coming off a 2021 season in which she batted .321 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 56 games, earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors and helping the Huskies reach the NCAA Super Regionals. She is one of three individuals with UW ties who are a part of the team — former Husky shortstop Ali Aguilar made the final roster, while current Washington coach Heather Tarr is the team’s head coach. Reynolds is one of seven collegians among the 18 players selected.

The World Games, which take place July 7-17, are held every four years and serve as the Olympics for sports that are not included in the Olympics — softball was removed following the 2020 Olympics. The U.S. roster includes eight players who were a part of the 2020 U.S. Olympic team.

Snohomish grad Uderitz drafted by Sounders

Snohomish High School graduate Hal Uderitz, who recently completed his senior season with the Seattle University men’s soccer team, was selected by Seattle Sounders FC in Tuesday’s MLS Super Draft.

Uderitz, a 6-foot-2 midfielder, was selected in the third round with the 72nd-overall pick. He was the only player to start all 11 games for the Redhawks this season as they earned an NCAA tournament berth. In 71 games over four years, playing both midfield and defense, he tallied 13 goals and nine assists.

Also selected in the draft was Shorewood High School graduate Charlie Ostrem. Ostrem, a senior defender who helped the University of Washington reach the NCAA championship game this season, was picked in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Chicago Fire.

Steelheads name women’s indoor coaches

The Snohomish County FC Steelheads have named Sean Large as the head coach of their women’s indoor team, while Corey Hendrickson will serve as the team’s assistant coach.

Large has a background coaching at Woodinville High School and has also served as president of the United Club, which is a member of the Northshore Youth Soccer Association. Hendrickson was a longtime player with the Snohomish Skyhawks indoor men’s team.

The Steelheads will be part of the Northwest Premier League Indoor beginning in February.
