Markovc does not qualify for 5000 finals at track worlds

EUGENE, Oregon — Amy-Eloise (Neale) Markovc did not advance at the World Athletics Championships.

The Glacier Peak High School graduate, who competes internationally for Great Britain, finished 12th in her heat of the women’s 5,000 meters Wednesday afternoon and did not move on to Saturday’s final.

Markov, the British champion, was one of 18 racers in her heat and 37 overall competing in the event. The top five in each heat advanced to the final, along with the next five best times.

Markovc’s time of 15 minutes, 31.62 seconds was a season best, but only good for 25th overall Wednesday. Her personal best time of 15:03.22, achieved during her heat at last year’s Tokyo Olympics, would not have been fast enough to qualify for Saturday’s final.

Racing in hot conditions, Markovc’s heat was raced at a quick pace early, causing the field to string out instead of staying in a pack. Markovc hung with the leaders for the first third of the race, hovering around 10th place. But the leading group of nine began to create separation shortly before the race’s midpoint, and Markovc was never able to bridge the gap.
