EVERETT — Crystal Moore and her Silver Lake Elementary second graders were called into the school library Friday afternoon for a surprise.

To thank her for her dedication, Premera Blue Cross awarded Moore and her class a $2,000 cash prize and a surprise visit from Blitz, the Seattle Seahawks mascot.

Moore, who has been at Silver Lake for two years, was nominated more than any of the 130 nominees for Premera’s annual Heroes in the Classroom program, Rachel Martin, a Premera spokesperson said.

She and two other Washington educators won the cash prize for school supplies, along with a personalized jersey and tickets to the Seahawks home game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Moore’s family was among the crowd of staff and students celebrating with green-and-blue pompoms and signs reading, “Thank you Mrs. Moore.”

Nominators, including students and parents, praised Moore for “igniting” a love of learning in her students and going out of her way to connect with students and their families.

“I hope we can use the money to do something good for the whole school,” Moore said. “I want my students to know they can do anything they put their minds to.”

Moore, a longtime Snohomish County resident, has a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Washington University and a master’s in education from Walden University. She began teaching with Everett Public Schools in 2006.

“We’re very proud of Mrs. Moore,” said Ian Saltzman, the district’s superintendent. “She cares deeply about her students.”
