The Athlete of the Week nominees for May 6-12. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s paper.

Abby Edwards | Snohomish | Softball

Edwards, a sophomore, broke the school record for strikeouts in a game when she fanned 23 batters in the Panthers’ nine-inning 2-1 victory over Cedarcrest on April 29. She also struck out 13 in another nine-inning victory, 6-5 over Everett on May 2 that clinched the Wesco 3A/2A regular season title. Edwards won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for April 29-May 5 by claiming 4,801 (51.53%) of the 9,317 votes.

This week’s nominees

Brody Dalgaard | Arlington | Boys Soccer

Dalgaard, a sophomore, scored the opening goal just three minutes into the game as the Eagles beat Shorecrest 2-0 on May 11 to earn their first state tournament birth in 39 years.

Matteo Ganje | Glacier Peak | Boys Track and Field

Ganje, a junior, won the 100 meters (10.67 seconds), 200 (21.55) and anchored the winning 400 relay (42.30) at the Wesco 4A Championships on May 8 and 10. His time in the 200 was at the time the second fastest in the state among all classifications.

Emily Garibay/Emma Okamura | Shorewood | Girls Tennis

Garibay and Okamura, both seniors, won the Wesco 3A South doubles championship as the No. 2 seed on May 7-8, recording three straight-set victories, including beating teammates and top-seeded Mari Brittle and Alex Mignogna 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match.

Jack Gripentrog | Mountlake Terrace | Baseball

Gripentrog, a sophomore, had two hits, including a two-run single that opened the scoring, as the Hawks beat Edmonds-Woodway 9-3 on May 11 to claim the Class 3A District 1 championship.

Jacob Kang | Jackson | Boys Golf

Kang, a junior, shot a 2-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors at the Wesco 4A Championships on May 8 at Battle Creek Golf Course. He won the tournament by two strokes.

Madeline Pewitt | Everett | Softball

Pewitt, a junior, slugged three home runs and had 11 RBI in a 25-4 victory over Lynnwood on May 6. She also doubled and scored three runs.

Baella Stich | Snohomish | Girls Track and Field

Stich, a junior, won four events at the Wesco 3A North Championships on May 8 and 10, winning the 100 meters (12.52 seconds), 200 (26.15), long jump (16 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and anchoring the 400 relay (50.43).
