Lakewood 56, Mount Vernon 55

MOUNT VERNON — With the clock winding down and his team trailing by two, senior Quinton Steen nailed a 3-pointer with five seconds left to lift the Cougars (8-2, 5-1) past the Bulldogs (4-6, 2-4) and narrowly avoid an upset.

The winning basket brought Steen (11 points) into double figures, while junior Caleb Greeland led the way for Lakewood with 20 points. The Cougars held a 31-25 lead at halftime, but Mount Vernon — led by seniors Baron Dorsey Brown (13 points) and Michael Johnson (12 points) — made a second-half push to bring it down to the wire.

Lakewood has a quick turnaround to face Marysville Getchell on Wednesday evening.

Edmonds-Woodway 53, Shorecrest 45

SHORELINE — In a battle of ‘undefeateds,’ the Warriors (12-0, 4-0) came out on top on the road to remain perfect, while the Scots fell to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in league.

EVERETT — The Vikings (4-7, 2-2) cruised to a convincing victory over the Marauders (6-6, 2-3), winning their second game in a row while snapping Mariner’s four-game win streak. Sophomore Devin Freeman scored a game-high 22 points for Lake Stevens, while junior Brody Pierpoint (13 points) and sophomore Yekebir Bekele (12 points) combined for 25. Mariner was led by senior Stavontai McSwain (19 points). Lake Stevens will face Jackson, while Mariner will match up against Glacier Peak, both on Friday evening.

EVERETT— The Spartans (1-8) captured their first win of the season thanks to a buzzer-beater from senior Jett Brager, which allowed Stanwood to narrowly escape a comeback effort from the Bruins (2-8), who overcame a slow start to retake the lead in the fourth quarter. Individual statistics were not reported. Stanwood faces Snohomish on Thursday night, while Cascade will take on Arlington on Friday.

Monroe 70, Sultan 15

MONROE — The Bearcats (10-2) surged past the Turks to win their third game out of the past four by way of ball movement and play-making, as the Bearcats dished 21 assists as a team.

Juniors Chayce Waite-Kellar (16 points) and Wyatt Prohn (12 points) led Monroe in scoring. Fellow junior Tate Hammerquist did not score any points, but stuffed the rest of the stat sheet with seven assists, six steals and four rebounds. Sultan’s top scorer was senior Taylor Horne (7 points).
