Blacklight: Marysville rockers ready for exposure

The Marysville band Blacklight didn’t settle on its name because of any long-abiding love for glow-in-the-dark posters.
No, the group instead enjoyed the ambiguity of the image.
“We liked the contrast: black and light,” drummer Joe Jarvis said.
On Sunday, the band hopes to shine at the daylong Exposure Music Festival. The show, at El Corazon in Seattle, includes more than 20 local punk and alternative rock bands.
The bands may play in an order based on the number of tickets each sells, with the biggest draw playing later, said Blacklight’s 17-year-old manager, Bern Osterhaug.
The group was still uncertain of where it would figure in the lineup earlier this week, mentioning some anxiety about the gig.
“It’s really hard coming from Marysville, to go down to Seattle,” Jarvis, 18, said.
The group shouldn’t worry too much. Its songs evoke varied rock ‘n’ roll influences, including Beatles-era classic rock and grunge groups such as Alice in Chains.
With two members of the band ready to graduate from Marysville-Pilchuck High School this spring, and singer Ty Gaynor, 19, already out of school, the guys in Blacklight sound ready to move to the next stage of their musical careers.
“We won’t have high school in the way,” Jarvis said. “That’s always been a setback.”
