Snohomish swimming

The junior freestyler swam 4A state meet qualifying times of 22.34 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 48.48 seconds in the 100 freestyle in helping Snohomish defeat Marysville-Pilchuck 118-68 in a Wesco North dual meet between unbeaten squads. He also swam legs for the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams, which also recorded state qualifying times.

Snohomish (4-0 league, 8-0 overall) has not lost a dual meet in Fulton’s three years on the varsity.

While primarily a freestyler, Fulton also holds the school record in the 100 backstroke and is close to the state qualifying time in the 100 butterfly.

“About the only thing he’s not good at is the breaststroke,” Snohomish boys swim coach Rob Serviss said.

Fulton, who was third in the 50 and 100 freestyle races at last year’s state meet, is changing the way he swims the 100. In Thursday’s meet against M-P, he was 1.5 seconds off his personal record and .7 seconds off his best time this season.

“That’s pretty good,” Serviss said.

Fulton had hoped to be challenged by M-P’s Steven Garka in the 100, but Garka swam the 200 and the 100 butterfly.

Serviss thinks Fulton wants to swim in college, but, he said, “We are in the hardest part of our training cycle right now and everyone’s pretty tired. If you asked him right now, I’m not sure what he’d say.”

With another full high school season and two state meets in his future, Fulton still has goals to reach.
