Public School Volunteer Week was celebrated April 17-21 by many local schools. At Olivia Park Elementary School in south Everett, staff and students recognized key volunteers.

Shawn Smith volunteers every Tuesday to provide a homework club for fifth-graders through his church, New Hope Church, which also runs the school’s backpack food program.

Amy Mujadin comes in three days a week to read with students, help with math and anything else teachers need. It adds up to about 1,000 hours every school year. “Ms. Amy” started volunteering six years ago when her granddaughter was in second grade at the school.

Zsofia Paztor, and Farmer Frog, helped launch the school’s garden, along with neighbors, parents and volunteers.

Meanwhile, the Everett Garden Club recently presented the school with a $500 check to help cover expenses for the garden. The Olivia Park Garden Club plans to use the money to buy new garden tools and pots for the strawberry plants.
