Grants cover safety projects to add crosswalks, guardrails

Snohomish County received $935,000 in grants from the state Highway Safety Improvement Program to apply to three safety projects.

Crosswalks will be upgraded in two areas. The “enhanced pedestrian crossings” will include raised pavement markers, advanced crossing signs and flashing beacons. Four spots along 52nd Avenue W in south Snohomish County will get the improvements to help pedestrians reach bus stops. Four more spots on Center Road also will be upgraded, helping students who walk to four nearby Mukilteo district schools.

In addition, Marsh Road will get additional guardrails along curved sections to help prevent cars from crossing into the steep wetland embankments that line the rural road.

Similar state grants last year helped the county apply high-friction surface treatment to several crash-prone stretches of rural roads, including Marsh Road.
