Volvo’s electric XC40 Recharge is renamed for 2025 and is now the Volvo EX40. Still fully electric, still a compact SUV, and still resplendent in Scandinavian design.

There are two primary models in the 2025 EX40 lineup: a 248-horsepower rear-wheel-drive model with one motor, and a 402-horsepower all-wheel-drive model with two motors.

The single-motor EX40 has a 296-mile range and an EPA rating of 118 MPGe city, 95 MPGe highway, and 106 MPGe combined. The twin-motor version has a 260-mile range and is rated 103 MPGe city, 85 MPGe highway, and 94 MPGe combined.

EX40’s braking system has two driver-selectable settings: one-pedal brake regeneration or normal mechanical braking.

I drove a twin-motor EX40 and reveled in its lively acceleration, civilized ride, and peaceful cabin. Its 260-mile range gave me some pause because common goods and services, handy for urban and suburban dwellers, are a trek for this Cascade Mountains dweller. To be honest, the higher-range single-motor EX40 wouldn’t have eradicated concerns. Full disclosure: I get range anxiety when my phone charge drops to 50 percent.

Both EX40 models have the same three available trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultra. Pricing starts at $53,795 for a single-motor Core, and tops out at $62,045 for a twin-motor Ultra. It’s not an overly broad price range, which makes the EX40 more attractive than average when it comes to opting for extra features.

That’s not just a nice way to say the EX40 Core will be weighed in the balance and found lacking. Its many standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, 12-inch digital instrument cluster, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight-speaker sound system, SiriusXM, navigation, voice command, keyless entry, and a power liftgate.

My top-of-the-line test car, an EX40 Twin Motor Ultra, had all the standard features of the mid-grade Plus trim, as well as a healthy dose of more add-ons such as 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon premium audio, heated rear seats, a 360 surround view camera, semi-autonomous driving mode and more.
