2006: All eyes on ‘The View’

Who would have thought that in the chain reaction that saw Katie Couric leave NBC’s “Today,” Meredith Veiera leaving “The View” to take her place and Rosie O’Donnell filling Veiera’s seat on ABC’s daytime gabfest, it would be O’Donnell who would grab all the headlines?
In what marked the show’s 10th season, “The View” was watched and talked about in 2006 more than virtually any other show. For this, “The View” is granted it own mini-most-memorable moments of 2006 list.
1. Star Jones: It started with the loudmouth’s departure and her on-the-air spat with Barbara Walters that ensured she’d leave on poor terms.
2. Rosie O’Donnell starts: Lots of people tuned in to see what O’Donnell would do on her first day, but it was what she did in days to come that made the most waves.
3. “Ching Chong” incident: O’Donnell made bigger headlines than Danny DeVito when she did a crude impression of Chinese news reporters talking about the comedian’s possibly drunken visit to the show.
4. Danny DeVito’s “drunk” appearance: Was he or wasn’t he? That’s the question. But, by now, most people have seen at least parts of DeVito’s wacky drop-in.
5. Rosie vs. The Donald: The year is ending on a feud to end all feuds as O’Donnell is taking on Donald Trump in a fight that’s quickly getting ugly.
