Adventurer Helen Thayer of Snohomish will talk about her latest book, “Walking the Gobi,” at 2 p.m. today at the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave. Thayer, 63, and her husband, Bill, are the first to walk all 1,600 miles of the Gobi Desert. Helen Thayer, a former Olympic athlete, is noted for being the first woman to walk and ski to the North Pole in 1988 at the age of 50. She and her husband have also paddled the Amazon, studied wolves in the Arctic, walked 1,200 miles in New Zealand studying Maori culture and trekked through deserts on three continents. Mukilteo author David Ash will sign copies of his Haiku for Life series at Barnes &Noble at Alderwood mall from 1 to 4 p.m. today as a fundraiser for local Catholic schools. Ash’s series includes “Haiku for Catholics,” “Haiku for Coffee Lovers” and “Haiku for Chocolate Lovers.” The store is at 19401 Alderwood Mall Parkway in Lynnwood.
