Camano Roaming Artists show their ‘plein air’ work

This summer, you might have noticed some artists roaming around the Stanwood and Camano Island areas with easels and brushes, painting in the elements and capturing images of the beautiful outdoors.

These are the “plein air” Roaming Artists, a local group of about 35 members who have been painting at up to 22 sites, including a trip to Artist Point at Mount Baker.

This weekend, the Roaming Artists will show their plein air creations at their annual Labor Day art show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Camano Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive, Camano Island. Free cookies and coffee will be served.

The majority of these completed original paintings will be available for viewing and buying. In addition, Beverly Paulson, the People’s Choice award winner at the 2007 art show, will raffle off one of her watercolors.

This year, the show’s featured artist is Elizabeth M. Hamlin, a Camano Island watercolor artist. Hamlin was inspired for her latest “Beach House” series while painting in plein air with the Roaming Artists this summer and said her fascination was piqued by the contrast between the organic shapes of local flora and manmade structures.

Over the years, Hamlin’s work has been exhibited in numerous shows locally and across the country. More recently, she developed a painting style called “color patch” and a North Light publication titled “Splash 8” included one of her paintings using this new color patch technique.

More watercolor: Eugene Erickson’s striking watercolor paintings of Northwest landscapes are on display through Sept. 16 at Autumn’s Framing &Gallery, 537 Main St.,Edmonds.

Erickson’s watercolors display how he has mastered his craft over decades of application, as an artist for the Boeing Co. and in many summer paint-outs with the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters.

Summer’s last splash: Next month, Insights Gallery will feature a show, “Last Splash of Summer,” displaying new summery work by artist Anne Schreivogl, including her piece “Summer Folly,” a painting featured on the artist series label of Lantz Cellars of their just released 2007 Sauvignon Blanc.

The show runs through Sept. 30 at Insights Gallery, 516 Commercial Ave., Anacortes. Schreivogl’s work will also include new oils from her recent trip to Greece.

Award winners: Pratt Fine Arts Center will exhibit artwork by the recipients of this year’s PONCHO and Pathways scholarships.

The PONCHO artist-in-residency program allows emerging artists access to classes and professional studios and equipment and offers opportunities for artists of color to pursue a specific artistic path with intensive and sustained training and technical support.

The show opens from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and runs through Sept. 26 at the Pratt Gallery at Tashiro Kaplan Studios, 306 S. Washington St., Suite 102, Seattle. Also, a lecture featuring the exhibiting artists will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Pratt Fine Arts Center, 1902 S. Main St., Seattle.

The artists exhibiting this year are Claire Jauregui, Allison Manch, Peggy Murphy and Esther Ervin.
