Clam up at Ivar’s today

Nothing fishy here: Today only, Ivar’s will sell clam chowder for 70 cents a cup, in celebration of its 70th anniversary.

Almost all Ivar’s locations will participate in the promotion, including Ivar’s Seafood Bar at 1402 SE Everett Mall Way, Everett.

Ivar’s manager Paul McDonald, who works at the Everett Mall location, said anyone who orders clam chowder will automatically receive the discount. Customers can order as many as three 8-ounce cups — 24 ounces of chowder for $2.10.

McDonald was braced for a crowd.

“I’m going to do like 25 gallons,” he said.

Ivar’s was founded in 1938 at Seattle’s Pier 54 by folk singer and radio personality Ivar Haglund. It now has more than 30 locations, including spots in Mukilteo, Marysville and Lynnwood.

While Ivar’s stadium stands, located in places including Safeco Field, won’t participate in the promotion, all other Ivar’s are expected to dish out the deal.
