Deception Pass was so named because George Vancouver when he first sailed towards it he thought it was a narrow bay not a strait.
Last week I found another deceptive part. The Lighthouse trail on the north side of the state park doesn’t actually lead to a lighthouse. I should have known this (duh, there’s no lighthouse on across the water when standing on the North Beach on the south side of the park) but I didn’t. Unfortunately I told my 3-year-old son that he could look forward to seeing a lighthouse at the end of the trail.
Oops.
Of course there was no lighthouse and I had a sorely disappointed boy on my hands (He wasn’t buying the small blinking light in an elevated cage as a lighthouse.), but overall the trails that traverse around Bowman Bay are nice and a perfect short hike for kids. We took the Lighthouse trail, which winds around a small bluff and ends at a beautiful vista looking out at the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Deception Island.
The vista allowed me to use one of my new gadgets to full effect. The above photos was taken with an iPhone with the app Photosynth. The app is great at capturing 360-degree (or less) panoramas and is fun to tinker with at the end of a good hike.
Oh and it usually won’t leave you feeling deceived.
