It’s a question everyone must answer at one time or another in life, and this weekend, it’s explored Sesame-Street style when Elmo and his friends visit Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the focus of a new Sesame Street show, “When Elmo Grows Up.”
The live show features the furry red character and his friends, Big Bird, Ernie, Bert and others. It also introduces a new friend, Abby Cadabby, as the group puts on a pageant in the cartoon neighborhood to play out their answers to that question.
As they share their career dreams with the audience, the characters’ behaviors and personalities, modeled after those of real-life children, will ring true for viewers.
Elmo, for example, represents the tag-along toddler who’s always trying to keep up with the big kids.
Abby Cadabby shows the inquisitive side of children as she continually tries things out, like drawing letters with crayons and practicing rhymes and other skills (among them, magic — she’s the daughter of a fairy godmother), according to press materials.
Her special tool for practicing is a “training wand.” Abby loves to use it but finds it disappointing at times, as her rhymes don’t always end successfully. Thus, her character brings to the audience a message that one must work through failures and keep trying to reach goals.
Also in this show, said Clara Rusch, director of production for VEE Corp., which puts on the “Sesame Street Live” productions, children learn they can be anything they want to be.
“We see the characters trying out, pretending and imagining what jobs they might want to have, which is exactly what kids do at home when they are playing. Kids try on different roles. Childhood is the perfect time to have fun pretending, exploring and discovering what you might love to do,” she said.
