Trillium sessile is well worth planting for its subtle beauty and unusual flower color. (Richie Steffen)

What: Trillium sessile, commonly called toadshade or sessile-flowered wakerobin, is easy to grow. It emerges in spring from the soil with leaves that are mottled chocolate, green and mint in color. The flowers can vary from deep maroon red, intense browns and bright chartreuse green.

Where: It grows best in rich moist to well-drained soils, although it will tolerate sandy sites and clay. Plant it in a location with light to open shade.

Size: This plant grows to 1 foot tall and 1 foot wide in 10 years.

Care: Once established, water at least occasionally (every 10 to 14 days) during dry weather, but it will do better if watered once per week). It often will go dormant in summer.
