Water features — ponds and waterfalls — are a popular addition to home gardens.
“It’s really soothing and pleasing,” said Jessica Adams, owner of Moorehaven, an exhibitor at this weekend’s Everett Home and Garden Show.
Moorehaven has been a fixture in south Everett for years. Come April, the business will move out of its residential setting to a commercial area in Kenmore. The move should help customers because the business will be able to feature more of its inventory.
“You’ll be able to see everything we have,” Adams said.
Moorehaven carries everything people need to install a pond, including the fish. They’ll even do it for you, for a fee.
Their salespeople are experts in liners, filters and pumps.
Ponds and waterfalls start around $200 and can cost thousands for elaborate and ornate designs.
If people want fish, they need to make sure the water is deep enough.
“If it’s too shallow, the fish can easily be caught,” Adams said.
Backyard critters including raccoons and birds may make a meal out of an expensive koi.
“A lot of people don’t know that,” she said.
The brightly colored Japanese fish range from $35 up to $2,000 or more for a large one. Ornamental carp can outlive people, with reports of some fish living more than 100 years.
Boundaries for what you can do with the sounds and colors of a water garden are broad, Adams said.
The best guide: “The nature of what type of yard you have and what pleases you,” she said.
Throughout March, Moorehaven is having a moving sale at the Everett location. It’s a good time to shop for bargains.
