Arlington JROTC teams take honors

The Arlington High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps recently hosted the 2009 Olympic Division of the Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference. About 400 people attended the event with teams from 10 schools competing.

Individuals from Arlington High School posted the following results:

Sean Gregory won third place and Sherman Pruitt took fourth place out of a total of 30 boys in the physical strength competition, which included push-ups, sit-ups and a milelong run.

Alvin Moore Jr. placed first in the overall Drill Commander category.

Arlington High School teams posted the following results:

Color guard team No. 1, third place; color guard team No. 2, fifth place; drill team, third place; and physical strength team, second place.

Everett speech team competes in tourney

The speech team at St. Mary Magdalen School recently participated in the Bishop Blanchet High School Speech Tournament.

Members of the speech team were: Erica Harris, Alyssa Harris, Zoe Jovanovich, Alexandra Bernhard, Jane Weiand, Steve Papagayo, Gabe Astone, Connor Mulvaney, Peyton Koivu, Patrick Grady, Andria Desroche, Chase Robinett, Nick Ulowetz, Issac Westlund, Madison Norman and Celina Georgeadis.

Zoe Jovanovich won an overall trophy for the team.

The students were led by speech coach Kelly Johnson.

Granite Falls students send gifts overseas

Students in Debra Howell’s classroom at Monte Cristo Elementary School in Granite Falls recently collected more than 700 pounds of gifts to distribute to children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Students participated in the Road Map to Civic Engagement curriculum sponsored by the Washington Reading Corps. They selected the gift-giving project as a way to give back to their global community.

Students spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19 collecting donations of coloring books, crayons, chalk, colored markers, toothbrushes and toothpaste, bubbles and other small toys and candy at a local store. More than 30 boxes were assembled by the students to be sent to U.S. military men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to be handed out to local children there.

Archbishop Murphy student wins invite

Archbishop Murphy High School sophomore Kylie Rebich recently was selected to participate in the 56th annual Washington Music Educators Association All-State Bands, Orchestras and Choirs.

Kylie was chosen for the concert band category in the B-flat soprano clarinet group. She also was chosen as an alternate in the tenor saxophone group.

The WMEA All-State Bands, Orchestras and Choirs is scheduled to convene in Spokane Feb. 12 to 15. High school musicians are expected to rehearse together under the direction of world-renowned conductors before presenting a concert in Spokane’s INB Performing Arts Center.

Kylie was selected to participate in the event through auditions.

As a freshman at Archbishop Murphy, Kylie lettered in music while participating in concert band, pep band and the orchestra for the 2008 spring musical. She took part in the solo and ensemble competition in 2008, which is a district level competition, and also participated in All-State. Kylie also plays with the AMHS girls’ basketball team and lettered in track as a freshman while maintaining a 3.96 grade point average.

Mukilteo nurse gets Best of Washington Award

A Mukilteo woman, Marcia Alexander, recently received the Washington Federation of Independent Schools Best of Washington Award. Alexander is a registered nurse and the school nurse at Northshore Christian Academy.

Alexander was among six individuals and two boards to be chosen for the award. The award is given to individuals or groups that personify the federation’s mission to strengthen K-12 education for Washington students through private schools.

The award winners will be honored Feb. 12 at the Liberty Theatre in Puyallup.

As Northshore Christian Academy’s school nurse, Alexander helps care for more than 700 students and 100 faculty and support staff. Under her guidance, the school has been able to offer services to students who experience health challenges such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, allergies, asthma and other chronic health issues.

Alexander graduated from the University of South Dakota with an associate of arts degree in nursing and is licensed in the state of Washington as a registered nurse. Before coming to Northshore, Alexander worked as an obstetrics-gynecology nurse in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Alexander’s seventh-grade son, Max, has attended Northshore Christian Academy since kindergarten. Alexander has been the school’s nurse since Max was in second grade.
