Monroe students in Merit semifinals
Monroe High School seniors Matt Engel and Howard Chen have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.
Howard plans to become a doctor and is applying to schools around the country. He plays varsity tennis and takes five advanced placement classes, including an independent study in calculus.
Matt dreams of becoming an astronaut and plans to get a degree in physics, mechanical engineering or geology. He has been studying for a Federal Aviation Administration flight test to receive his pilot’s license for single-engine planes. He also is active in four school clubs and cross country.
Granite grad makes Kettering dean’s list
Shawn Rood, a 2009 graduate of Granite Falls High School, made this summer’s dean’s list at Kettering University in Flint, Mich.
Rood, 20, is majoring in chemistry and was honored for a 4.0 GPA.
He is the son of Steven and Hock Rood.
Lynnwood man awarded scholarship
Jonathan Boone of Lynnwood was among 200 Biola University students to receive the president’s scholarship for this academic year.
Boone is a freshman.
Biola University is a private, Christian school is in La Mirada, Calif. The president’s scholarship is the university’s highest honor.
