50 years ago (1962)
A fire raced through the Lloyd Van Horn lumber mill on Ebey Island’s north end. Discovered by mill caretaker Joe reeves this morning, the blaze destroyed all but one small building. Loss was estimated at $11,000. The mill had been closed for nearly two months. Cause of the fire was unknown.
An open house in the Snohomish city jail was set for tomorrow afternoon and evening, according to police committee chairman Charles Adams of the Snohomish City Council. Thanks to work by off-duty policemen, the jail was now spic and span.
25 years ago (1987)
Donna Newlander said she couldn’t miss last night at Evergreen Lanes when she exceeded her previous high series by 82 pins. She missed with her first ball and then rolled nine consecutive strikes and a 12th frame spare for a 278 first game. She followed that with a 267 second game before returning to her average with a 169 third game.
Firefighters braved acrid smoke to quell a blaze at United OK Tires at 2801 Rucker Ave. Quick discovery saved the building from considerable damage. Battalion Chief Larry Dressel said it was about five minutes from being a real hummer.
