Village Theatre won two Gregory Awards on Monday, along with three People’s Choice Awards.
Much like the Tony Awards, the Gregory Awards recognized accomplishments by actors, directors and designers who worked in Seattle-area productions. The 11th annual event was held Oct. 28 at McCaw Hall in Seattle.
Village Theatre was nominated in 11 categories, including outstanding musical, costume design and lighting for the 2018-19 season.
Kathryn Van Meter was named outstanding choreographer for “Matilda,” which staged January and February. The hit musical was based on Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 children’s book of the same name.
“Matilda,” a story about a brilliant young girl with extraordinary powers, was praised for its choreography in The Daily Herald’s review of the production. Van Meter, of Seattle, who also directed “Matilda,” was previously named outstanding choreographer for Village Theatre’s 2014-15 production of “Mary Poppins.”
Seattle’s Amiya Brown won outstanding lighting design for her work on “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” staged in March and April. Brown is a past winner of a Gypsy Rose Lee Award, which honors in excellence in Seattle-area productions.
Sound Theatre Co. in Seattle won theater of the year; ACT Theatre, ArtsWest Playhouse & Gallery, Seattle Public Theater and Seattle Repertory Theatre were also in the running.
All five of Village Theatre’s productions this season received nominations: “The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes,” “Matilda,” “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” “Million Dollar Quartet” and “I Do! I Do!”
“Matilda” received the most (five), including outstanding musical performance (Basil Harris as the controlling headmistress Miss Trunchbull), outstanding musical and outstanding supporting musical performance (Chris Ensweiler as Mr. Cornwood and Marissa Ryder as Miss Honey).
“Matilda” also won three People’s Choice Awards, which allow the public to vote on performances or productions that weren’t nominated by The Gregory Awards’ judges.
Holly Reichert and Nava Ruthfield, who took turns playing the title character in “Matilda,” won outstanding musical performance. Van Meter, the director, and the ensemble also won People’s Choice Awards.
