YAKIMA — A man caught peeping on women in the restroom of the downtown Yakima library was sentenced Thursday to 45 days in jail.

Jose Luis Vazquez, 48, pleaded guilty to voyeurism and was given credit for 27 days already spent in jail.

The case began Aug. 29 when a woman said she was startled to see a man’s head under the stall door.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that police detectives complained Yakima Valley Regional Library Director Kim Hixson was reluctant to assist in the investigation. Hisxon said safety is most important, but it has to be balanced against patron privacy and the risk of false accusations.

Vazquez was arrested after a detective’s wife who was at the library reported he matched the description of the suspect.
