Tina Meyer, of Arlington, was among a trio of Washington state family members who were honored in April with a Public Service Award by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The women were honored for their advocacy for stronger distracted driving laws in Washington.
Meyer’s son, Cody, was struck by a driver who was looking at his cellphone. Cody Meyer, a certified flagger, was directing traffic in a construction zone in December 2015 when the crash occurred. He suffered traumatic brain injury and died six months later from a heart attack, a complication from his injuries. He was 23 years old.
Tina Meyer had a role in helping lawmakers pass the state’s expanded distracted driving law last year.
“Phones aren’t worth this much hurt,” she told a Herald writer at the time. “That’s why I’m working so hard.”
