EVERETT — Two buildings at the Snohomish County Courthouse campus were evacuated for less than an hour on Tuesday after smoke from an elevator mechanical issue triggered fire alarms.

Around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to the alarms at the Administrative West and Robert J. Drewel buildings on the county campus at 3020 Oakes Ave.

Sierra Cornelius, a spokesperson for the county auditor’s office, said firefighters and county facilities workers traced the source of the problem to a mechanical issue in an elevator used at the county election offices.

“There was no fire,” Cornelius wrote in an email Tuesday. “By 11:40 a.m., employees were provided notice that they could safely return to both county buildings.”

All election materials and equipment remained secure and were not damaged from the incident.
