EVERETT — As Washington’s famous cold and wet season begins, Everett Utilities will be selling rain barrels Saturday.
Rain barrels can be used, in conjunction with a gutter system, to funnel water that can then be saved.
The 55-gallon barrels are $65 and can be purchased 10 a.m. to noon Saturday with cash or check at the Everett Public Works building, 3200 Cedar Street. Additionally, on Oct. 21, the city will host a workshop for those wishing to build one themselves. That $50 fee for the workshop includes a barrel and begins at 6 p.m. An RSVP is needed for the workshop.
To RSVP, call 425-257-8992 or email everettpw@everettwa.gov.
“Rain barrels continue to be extremely popular,” Everett senior public education specialist Apryl Hynes said in a press release. “They are a simple and easy way to manage the effects of rainwater runoff by allowing you to direct the rainwater where you would like to use it most.”
Average annual rainfall in and around Everett is about 36 to 40 inches per year. It is not recommended to drink rainwater. Consider using it for chores like watering a garden or washing a car.
It might be a good time to install a collection barrel — rain is in the forecast next week.
