EVERETT — Highway 529 will close to northbound traffic Friday at Steamboat Slough so Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews can pave a section of the highway.
The closure will begin 10 p.m. Friday and continue until 4 a.m. Monday. People will be able to use northbound Highway 529 to reach Smith Island in north Everett. Vehicles leaving the island will need to use southbound Highway 529.
Rain could postpone the work, a WSDOT press release said.
To assist pedestrians, bicyclists and people who use mobility devices along the Highway 529 northbound lanes, the contractor will operate a shuttle to take them around the construction zone.
The new off-ramp is part of a project to complete the I-5/Highway 529 interchange and extend the northbound I-5 HOV lane from downtown Everett to Steamboat Slough.
When complete in late spring or early summer 2025, the project will improve access to and from downtown Marysville by adding a new northbound I-5 off-ramp to Highway 529 and a new southbound Highway 529 on-ramp to southbound I-5.
The work also includes a new roundabout where the northbound I-5 off-ramp merges with Highway 529, which will allow vehicles exiting I-5 to go north or south on Highway 529. The roundabout also will allow vehicles traveling north on Highway 529 to reach the new southbound I-5 on-ramp.
