LYNNWOOD — The city of Lynnwood’s designs for widening 196th Street SW are nearly finished.
Property acquisitions are scheduled to wrap up by the end of the year, with construction in spring 2019.
“We have quite a bit of staff and consultants who have teamed up to pull the project together and get it delivered,” said David Mach with public works.
The project has been awarded more than $21.6 million in grants. The city also has allocated $1.2 million. Another $7.6 million is not yet funded. Additional grants are being sought.
The city aims to bring the thoroughfare from five to seven lanes and add wider sidewalks.
The plans for 196th make up the second largest city project under consideration, after the Poplar Way bridge extension.
The city now is pursuing leads for funding the Poplar Way work, which is estimated at $35 million. There is hope for that to come together in the next few years, Mach said.
As for 196th, also known as Highway 524, it is Lynnwood’s busiest east-west arterial. The stretch planned for widening is about 0.7 miles between the Lynnwood Convention Center and the Fred Meyer store.
Construction could take into mid-2021. It ties into the plans to redevelop the area called City Center into a walkable downtown.
Councilmembers were briefed on the project at a work session Monday. Another briefing is expected later this year.
