EVERETT — An Arlington-based nonprofit secured an almost $9 million grant Monday from the state to expand housing for adults with disabilities, a press release said.

Village Community Services helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities find housing, employment and volunteer opportunities, among other services. It received $8,959,672 from the Washington State Department of Commerce’s 2025 Multifamily Housing Unit Rental Housing Program.

The money will go toward the organization’s Village Housing project, which provides permanent rental housing, paired with professional support services, for individuals who often face barriers to independent living. The project is funded through state and federal grants, foundations and individual donors.

“This funding allows us to complete and sustain homes that offer not just shelter, but dignity, stability, and the opportunity to truly belong in a community,” said Sarah Mulligan, Village Community Services’ Chief Executive Officer, in the release. “This is how communities are built — when public investment, nonprofit leadership, and community partners come together around a shared commitment to inclusion.”

In 2022, the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services estimated 37,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were facing housing insecurity statewide. The Village Housing project was launched in 2023.
