Northwest Briefly: Spokane driver hits seven cars in 13 minutes

SPOKANE — Police say a man driving away from a Spokane bar hit at least seven cars within 13 minutes, including one driven by an off-duty detective, before they arrested him for drunken driving.

Thirty-two-year-old Jason G. Cross was booked into the Spokane County Jail on Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence and seven charges of failure to leave information at the scene of an accident.

Police say they were alerted by someone at a bar in Browne’s Addition, who told them a drunken driver was leaving in a pickup truck at 3:28 p.m. Saturday.

Cross was arrested at 3:41 p.m. after his pickup struck cars and then wedged between two vehicles stopped at a red light. Off-duty detective Neil Gallion was in one of the cars and followed Cross’ pickup. Police say the pickup hit other cars before they caught up to Cross.

Seattle: Services held for teen killed in mall

Dozens of people crowded into a south Seattle funeral home to mourn a teenage boy who was shot and killed at the Southcenter mall in Tukwila.

Sixteen-year-old Daiquan Jones died after a fight broke out that erupted in gunfire and resulted in the mall being evacuated on Nov. 22. Jermaine McGowan, also 16, was wounded.

On Saturday, some mourners wore memorial T-shirts imprinted with Jones’ picture as they made their way into the Dayspring-Fitch &Sons funeral home.

Meanwhile, police kept watch over the service from across the street. Three patrol cars were parked nearby in addition to unmarked cars driven by Seattle Police Department gang unit detectives.

A 21-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting Jones. Barry L. Saunders was arrested in Portland, Ore., on Wednesday and has waived extradition to King County, where he will be arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Chewelah: Archery death ruled accidental

The death of an Eastern Washington boy who bled to death after he was shot with an arrow has been ruled accidental.

The Stevens County coroner says the arrow struck 12-year-old Alex Niskanen in the left shoulder and severed his axillary artery. Niskanen, a Deer Park Middle School student, was visiting friends south of Chewelah on Thursday when the accident occurred.

The sheriff’s office has not identified the boy who released the arrow. Coroner Patti Hancock says only that he was older than the victim, and that they were playing at the time.

Deer Park schools are among 30 schools statewide that participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program, but it was not immediately known whether Niskanen participated in the program.

Puyullap: Police meth team disbanding

Puyallup is disbanding a police team that has dealt with methamphetamine labs after the city was cited for not protecting officers from hazardous chemical exposure.

It’s part of a deal with the state Department of Labor and Industries. Under terms of the deal, Puyallup will not pay $1,500 in fines for six safety violations it received in December 2007.

Instead, the city agreed to let the Pierce County Clandestine Laboratory Team handle its meth lab calls in the future and to start training its jail employees in decontamination procedures.
