OAK HARBOR — The Oak Harbor police chief who left his gun in a public restroom has resigned. KIRO-TV reported Chief Ed Green gained public attention when he left his gun inside the bathroom of a local grocery store in March.

Oak Harbor Mayor Bob Severns had been conducting an investigation of the police department before the bathroom incident and issued a written reprimand at the time.

Green is a veteran officer with 30 years of experience, including time in the LAPD’s gang unit.

Four years ago, a former mayor forced the previous police chief to resign.

Severns told the Whidbey Island newspaper that the department was broken. He cited a lack of communication between the chief and the chief’s captain, but didn’t mention the incident with the gun.
