Everett man dead, woman critical after Whidbey Airpark crash

The crash occurred in a wooded area just off the runway of the small airport near Langley.

LANGLEY — An Everett man was killed in a plane crash at Whidbey Airpark on Saturday, the Island County Sheriff’s Office said. Another person who was on board, a woman, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition.

The Island County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Marc Drake, 63, of Everett. In news releases, officials have not said who might have been piloting what was described as a two-seat experimental aircraft.

The crash occurred in a wooded area just off the runway. Whidbey Airpark, two miles southwest of Langley, has a single asphalt runway and is also known as Porter Field.

Personnel from South Whidbey Fire/EMS, the sheriff’s office and the Langley Police Department responded to the crash.t 11:16 a.m. Saturday.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will handle the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
