EVERETT — Starting Saturday, paving repairs will force the overnight closure of four lanes on southbound I-5 through Everett.
The $8.1 million repairs will take place on a 4-mile stretch of southbound I-5 beginning at Broadway Avenue and ending at 100th Street Southeast, the Washington State Department of Transportation said. Crews will close four lanes of road that the agency said has deteriorated as more than 95,000 vehicles travel over it every day.
The paving project will improve the driving surface of the highway and allow crews to perform additional repairs, the department said.
The closures will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. on Sunday. After this weekend, crews will close four lanes between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Two lanes will reopen at 4 a.m. those mornings before all lanes are reopened at 5 a.m.
The HOV on-ramp connecting Broadway to southbound I-5 will also close during those times, reopening at 6 a.m. weekdays.
People traveling through the stretch of I-5 should expect delays for the next 14 weeks, the department said. The department is still finalizing dates for more lane reductions and ramp closures. Pavement grinding in the area will also create uneven, grooved pavement with abrupt edges. Motorcyclists should use extreme caution, the department said.
Major construction work will also close all northbound lanes of I-5 in much of Seattle starting Friday night as much-needed repairs to the Ship Canal Bridge begin. The highway will reopen in the early morning on Monday and lanes will be reduced for four weeks.
Local officials said that Seattle closure will have regional traffic impacts and recommended commuters take public transit to and from the city.
