50 years ago (1958)
The old Lewis Street bridge in Monroe, recently replaced with a newer span, dropped into the Skykomish River this morning. Its piers were blown out from beneath by dynamite. Associated Sand &Gravel salvaged some metal and Stuart Trombley was wrecking the rest. It would be pulled from the river bed and cut up. Monroe Monitor editor Howard Voland cooperated with a Herald photographer to get a spectacular shot.
Lt. Col. Danforth of Paine Air Force Base congratulated Janet Vincent on being chosen Girl of the Month for February by the Everett Exchange Club. Looking on were Brian Wallace, boy of the month, and John Medina of the host club.
25 years ago (1983)
Rosalynn Sumners, the pride of Edmonds, held on to her United States Figure Skating Championship in Pittsburgh. She skated four triple jumps with the judges giving her a score of 5.9 out of 6 for her presentation in a classical music presentation that charmed the audience. After her routine, electrified spectators gave her a standing ovation.
Steven Stenberg, a senior at Mountlake Christian High School who was nominated to the Washington Scholars Program, managed to maintain straight-A grades along with being co-captain of his school’s football and basketball teams. Final selection of the 147 Washington Scholars from the approximately 600 nominations would be held in mid-month.
