Snohomish City Council member Hetherington resigns

The council will interview candidates and appoint someone to assume the seat Jan. 1.

EVERETT — A Snohomish City Council member will resign at the end of the year. The council has already started the selection process to fill her seat at the start of next year.

Maygen Hetherington announced her resignation at the end of a City Council meeting on Oct. 21.

“It’s been a real pleasure, truly, serving with all of you,” she said during the meeting. “I’m sorry I couldn’t continue in the way that I thought that I would.”

She provided a more detailed explanation in the city’s quarterly magazine.

“I carefully considered my effectiveness, my family priorities, and my personal capacity for service. The outcome was clear: stepping aside now is the best way for me to serve with integrity,” she wrote. “I had hoped this role would strengthen my ability to advocate for downtown and the broader community. Instead, balancing the dual responsibilities of councilmember and Executive Director of the Historic Downtown Snohomish Association limited my effectiveness in both.”

Hetherington will continue to serve until the end of the year while the council works through the selection process to appoint a new City Council member.

All interested parties have until noon Nov. 14 to submit a letter of interest to the city clerk, City Administrator Heather Thomas-Murphy said during the meeting. The council will discuss all applicants at a workshop on Nov. 25 and interview the top candidates at 5 p.m. on Dec. 2.

The appointee will be voted on and sworn in during the 6 p.m. regular City Council meeting after the interviews.

Hetherington was elected in 2023 and will complete two years of her four-year term.

Once appointed, the new City Council will serve for one year and will need to run for election in 2026 to complete the last year of the term.
