Tonight’s for art in Snohomish

Snohomish High School presents its annual Night of the Arts benefit 5-9 p.m. today at the school, 1316 Fifth St., Snohomish.

The evening will include art displays and performances, technical demonstrations, awards, art sales and a silent auction.

The event is a fund-raiser to purchase equipment for the school art and ceramics departments. Admission is $3 for adults, free for students.

Students from kindergarten through high school will show their artworks, including paintings, pottery, videos and multimedia works. The public will be able to purchase work in a silent auction. There also will be student presentations of music, dance and poetry.

The guest artist for the evening will be Marvin Oliver, a professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington and curator of American Indian art at the Burke Museum in Seattle.

‘Real World Problems’ winners

Snohomish County PUD announced winning teams for its “Real World Problems” competition, which challenged teams of high school students to investigate environmentally friendly power sources.

Winners are:

First place: Biomega Team, Mariner High School, Everett: Huda Alharab, Karen Bouldin, Diana Eng, Lindsay Tuiasosopo and Trenton Tuiasosopo.

Second place: Mixed Minds Team, Mariner High School: Wesley Burns, Stephanie Danson, Amrinder Grewal, Robert Nguon and Thuy Tran.

Third place: Biomass Team, Snohomish High School, Snohomish: Michelle Yi, Stephanie Casey and Steven Burggraaf.

Entries were judged on practicality of the plan, knowledge of the subject, benefits of the plan, creativity and originality of the idea, and the ability to communicate and sell the idea clearly and succinctly.

Silvana offers community sale

In the tradition of a garage sale, Silvana-area residents will offer food booths, antiques and garage sale items 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Viking Hall, 1313 Pioneer Highway in Silvana.
