Due process is for all of us

The Trump administration and multiple media are focusing on whether Kilmer Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang. Most of the people demanding his return are not claiming he is innocent; they are demanding that the Trump administration made an error, and it needs to make the error good. Bring him back and give him a fair hearing and then deport him if still justified.

The important story is not the specifics of who was deported. The important story is not whether the deportee was a “good” person or a “bad person”. The important story is whether we are a nation of laws that apply equally to everyone, or a nation ruled by the desires of the current president. The government “made a mistake” in some of their deportations. If that “mistake” is allowed to stand, then it sets a precedent with the lack of consequences for future “mistakes”.

I know we all think this could never happen to me or to “us” when we disagree with government policy. Please remember the rest of the poem, “First they came for …”
