More effective to reduce demand

The Sunday letter, “Please take time to voice your opinion,” asked us each to voice our opinion on the rising gas prices. Although I have the same sentiments as the writer, I have a slightly different voice and I thank her invitation.

On the news a local Seattle station did a poll about how much the price of gas needed to rise before one would change their driving habits. One person stated $6 per gallon. In my opinion, this person is either selfish or uneducated. I will give this person the benefit of the doubt and educate a little bit.

Economy and pricing is controlled by something called supply and demand. The more the public wants an item, the higher the price will rise if the business owner is good at business. Secondarily, it is often the said business that offers up polls so they can better predict what a consumer will do. So by responding that one will pay $6 per gallon for gasoline you are giving the business owner the edge. Now, I am sure that most did not quote this price but many have quoted one.

As for me and my household, we have again begun to not drive to the stores on a whim, but are combining our trip to work with food buying on the way home. We have again begun to stay home for recreation and one drive for must-be-there places, such as doctor appointments.

Write my representatives? Been there, tried that. It is far more effective to silently withhold my demand until I see the cost of the supply go down to what I believe is a fair price when compared to oil corporation profits.
