Here is The Herald’s 2016 All-Area Girls Basketball Team as selected by the sports staff in consultation with area coaches:

Player of the Year: Mikayla Pivec, W, Sr., Lynnwood

The two-time Everett Herald Player of the Year recently repeated as Gatorade Washington Player of the Year. The Oregon State-bound Pivec filled the stat sheet regularly during senior campaign averaging 21.7 points, 14.1 rebounds, 4.4 steals and 4.1 assists per game for the Royals, who finished third at the 3A state tournament.

Coach of the year: Ken Roberts, Snohomish

After losing their first three games of the season, all to perennial playoff teams, Roberts and the Panthers won 22 straight contests on their way to the 4A state championship game. Snohomish knocked off Lewis and Clark and Bothell on its way to a showdown with undefeated Central Valley, which edged the Panthers in the title game.

First team

Jordyn Edwards, G, Sr., Lynnwood

Edwards is a first-team, all-area selection for a second year in a row after helping lead Lynnwood back to the state tournament and a third-place finish. Edwards, who has signed with Colorado State, averaged 11 points, 4.2 rebounds, four assists and 3.2 steals this season for the Royals.

Madeline Smith, P, Sr., Snohomish

Another repeat all-area player, the 6-foot-1 Smith scored 13.8 points and grabbed 8.5 rebounds per game for Snohomish this season. The Montana State commit led the Panthers, who finished second in 4A, with 28 points in the 4A championship game.

Madison Pollock, G/F, Sr., Snohomish

Pollock, a 6-foot-1 forward in the past, worked her way into the mix at guard a bit this season. Pollock, who has committed to the University of San Diego, averaged 12.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and “lots of assists,” according to Snohomish head coach Ken Roberts.

Gracie Castaneda, G, Sr., Arlington

Castaneda helped make Arlington’s pestering defense go. The senior averaged 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists for the Eagles, which went to state all four years Castaneda played at Arlington and most recently placed second at the Hardwood Classic.

Missy Peterson, G, Jr., Edmonds-Woodway

Peterson averaged 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists for Edmonds-Woodway this season. The junior averaged 26 points in the Warriors’ final two games of the district tournament and helped Edmonds-Woodway win six consecutive elimination games and place sixth at the 3A state tournament, where she was a second-team All-Tournament selection.
