HILLSBORO, Ore. — Timely hits were hard to come by for the Everett AquaSox on Friday.
Four hits, three walks and two batters being hit by pitches gave the Frogs nine baserunners, but Everett (17-29 second half, 54-58 overall) struck out 14 times in a 3-1 loss to the Hillboro Hops (17-29, 50-62) Friday at Hillsboro Ballpark.
Nico Tellache’s strong start gave the AquaSox a chance, but Hillsboro Gonzalez escaped the ninth inning with his seventh save of the season.
Gonzalez opened the final inning by hitting Charlie Pagliarini (1-for-2, walk, run) with a pitch. Milkar Perez drove in Pagliarini with a two-out single, but Carson Jones grounded out to end Everett’s last gasp.
Hops starter Daniel Eagen (7-5) dominated during seven innings of work, striking out 11 Frogs while allowing two hits and two walks.
Carter Dorighi (1-for-4), Tai Peete (0-for-4) and Matthew Ellis (0-for-4) each struck out three times against Hops pitching, including eight combined times versus Eagan.
Tellache (4-4), making his eighth start of the season after serving mostly as a reliever early in the season, gave Everett six strong innings. The 27-year-old left-hander allowed a lone run on four hits and a walk while striking out three Hops.
Holding a 1-run lead, Hillboro tacked on two runs in the seventh against AquaSox reliever Brock Moore. Jansel Luis hit a one-out single to center, and moved to third on Ellis’ passed ball and Moore’s wild pitch. After Modeifi Marte walked and stole second, Juan Corniel doubled to left field to drive in both baserunners for a 3-0 Hops advantage.
The AquaSox loaded the bases in the eighth inning against relief pitcher Rocco Reid but came up empty. Reid hit Perez with a pitch, Jones walked and Curtis Washington Jr. singled to center. Dorighi and Peete followed with strikeouts, and Luis Suisbel flied to right field to allow Reid’s escape.
