Arlington’s Max Gray claims another Swiss football title

Gray led the Calanda Broncos to their fourth championship in his five seasons with the team.

Max Gray’s Swiss football journey has resulted in another championship.

The 2014 Arlington High School graduate, in his fifth season playing professional football in Switzerland, led the Calanda Broncos to the Swiss Nationalliga A championship in July. It was the team’s fourth league title during Gray’s tenure with the team.

Gray, who played this season as an all-purpose back, was involved in 17 touchdowns — six receiving, six rushing, three passing, two returns — as Calanda finished the season 15-1. The Broncos went undefeated in the Swiss Nationalliga A, claiming the Swiss Bowl championship with a 35-14 victory over the Zurich Renegades on July 13 in Grenchen, Switzerland. Gray scored two touchdowns during the game, one rushing and one receiving.

Gray and the Broncos nearly claimed a European championship as well. Calanda reached the championship game of the Central European Football League, beating the Danish-champion Copenhagen Towers 33-10, the Italian-champion Parma Panthers 34-20 and the French-champion Paris Flash 14-0 to reach the CEFL Bowl championship game. Calanda hosted the Austrian-champion Danube Dragons in the CEFL Bowl on June 24 in Chur, Switzerland, but fell 27-14.
