PREP ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck makes free throws pay off
Published 10:02 pm Thursday, December 16, 2010
LAKE STEVENS — There is a reason coaches make their players shoot free throws during every practice, and the Marysville-Pilchuck girls basketball team can attest to the value of that practice.
In a back and forth game that had Lake Stevens leading virtually the entire way, M-P got its first lead with close to a minute to go as Becca Lentz hit a 3-pointer, and then shut the door on Lake Stevens at the foul line, keeping the Tomahawks undefeated in the Wesco North at 4-0 with 57-51 win Wednesday at Lake Stevens.
“We played a great first half, and did a great job containing their leading scorers in the first half,” Lake Stevens head coach Randy Edens said. “But it came down to free throws at the end, and they killed us there.”
M-P shot twice as many free throws as Lake Stevens (1-3, 1-4), with the Tommies going 15-for-28 from the stripe, compared to the Vikings’ 8-for-14 showing.
“It was a pretty big disparity in momentum and free throws at the end,” Edens added.
Lake Stevens’ Katie Goddard had a career-high 17 points, 13 coming in a big first half for the sophomore guard.
Tomahawks Junior forward Dacia Heckendorf led all scorers with 18 points.
