Community roundup: Nowak to compete in Ironman 70.3 World Championship

Doug Nowak of Mukilteo, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, will compete at Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Henderson, Nev., one month after qualifying for the 2014 World Triathlon Grand Finals for sprint and Olympic distances.
The 35-year-old Nowak competed last month in the national championships for sprint and Olympic distances in Milwaukee, and placed second in his age group (35-39) for the sprint distance (1 hour, 3 minutes, 24 seconds) and eighth in his age group for the Olympic distance (2:01:56). Both finishes qualified Nowak for next year’s world championships in Edmonton, Alberta.
With his recent performances, Nowak has qualified for the triathlon world championships at the sprint, Olympic, 70.3 and Ironman distances. He competed last fall at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Matteson to play in Norway
Evan Matteson, a 2008 graduate of Meadowdale High School, has signed a contract to play professional basketball with Gimle BBK of Bergen, Norway. Gimle BBK plays in Norway’s premier men’s basketball division.
The 6-foot-10 Matteson averaged 15.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots a game to help the Bellingham Slam win the recent International Basketball League championship.
Matteson played college basketball at NCAA Division II Texas A&M International. As a senior in 2011-2012, he led the team in scoring (12.4 points per game) and rebounding (6.9).
