Jackson girls slip past Thunderbirds in 2OT

Herald Staff

MILL CREEK – It took a solid effort from the free throw line in double overtime for Jackson to hold off Shorewood 63-55 in a Western Conference South Division game on Wednesday night.

The Timberwolves, shooting 9-for-11 in the extra eight minutes, were led by a 4-for-5 effort by Carli McClenahan.

The Timberwolves felt that they had let a victory get away at the end of regulation when Shorewood senior Kim Vanderzee scored from the baseline as the buzzer sounded, leaving the two teams tied at 44.

“We panicked,” said Timberwolves head coach Julie Iverson. “The girls were down when that basket went in, but I told them to look at it as 0-0 and to hold Shorewood to one shot.”

Four minutes later, each team had added six points, setting up a second overtime period.

The Jackson press was larceny in plain sight with Andrea Jones, Danielle Arango and Cat Baller all making key steals in the final overtime as Jackson faced the Thunderbirds minus the offensive power of Jessica Shadle. Shadle fouled out with 20 points and eight rebounds.

“We had great team defense,” said Iverson. “We were patient, boxed out well and hurt them with the press.”

Jackson was led in scoring and rebounding by Emilee Eisinger with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Vanderzee led Shorewood with 12 points.

The win keeps Jackson atop the Wesco South standings in a tie with Meadowdale and Kamiak, both winners on Wednesday.
