LAKE STEVENS – Day 2 of the 36th Annual Dennis McDonald Multi Events State Championships at Lake Stevens High School saw two athletes pull off incredible come-from-behind efforts, and one athlete manage to hold on to win.

Stanwood’s Rachele Kloke maintained her first-day lead to win the girls decathlon event.

Kloke beat a field of eight girls, including Spartans track and field teammate Sarah Jackson, who finished second overall.

Brittany Aanstad of Lake Stevens, who started the day in fourth place, ripped through the second day of competition to win the girls heptathlon event.

Aanstad took over the lead after the javelin event and held her own in the 800-meter run to finish with a score of 4,310 points, 78 points ahead of Seattle Academy’s Jade Langston (4,232).

Bree Leroy of Gig Harbor, who lead after Day 1, placed third with a score of 4,310.

Other local finishers in the heptathlon were: Kayla Shaughnessy (Stanwood) sixth place, Brittany Tri (Lake Stevens) seventh, Brooklyn Holton (Arlington) 10th, Shayna Prause (Arlington) 11th, Amanda Overdick (Lynnwood) 14th, Molly Gibson (Shorecrest) 16th, Angie Smith (Mariner) 20th, and Ginny Wilson (Arlington) 21st.

Casey Stevick of Olympia overtook Stanwood’s Isaac Teichgrab in the boys decathlon event.

Stevick, in second place after Friday’s events, built a lead of 184 points going into the final event, the 1,500-run. Teichgrab finished ahead of Stevick, but the time difference wasn’t enough to give Teichgrab the overall lead.

Stevick finished with 6,007 points, 154 points ahead of Teichgrab, who had 5,853.

Three other Spartans finished the decathlon, which had 26 athletes compete. Kale Schmidt was fifth overall with a score of 5,262, Robert Hanke (3,953) finished 17th and Justin Luke (25th-3,517).

Lake Stevens had two athletes finish in the top 15. Caleb Masse (eighth-4,627) and Brennan Frost (12th-4,539) represented the Vikings and had the advantage of competing on their home turf.

Ryan Schimpf of Arlington was the other local participant in the boys decathlon. Schimpf finished 15th overall with a score of 4,244.
