SAN DIEGO — The Monroe boys basketball team went to the Surf ‘N Slam Holiday Classic undefeated and returned with a trophy, but it wasn’t exactly the one the Bearcats hoped for.
Monroe held a narrow two-point lead going into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on, falling to Eastlake 50-49 in the fourth-place game of the tournament played at University City High School in San Diego. The Bearcats (7-2) return with the sixth-place trophy.
Monroe lost its opening game of the tournament to Mission Bay of San Diego before defeating Vacaville (Calif.) to reach the fourth-place game.
But despite the return of leading scorer and rebounder Cole Parker, who missed the Vacaville game with the flu, Monroe will leave California having lost two of three after opening the season with seven wins in a row.
Eastlake (4-6), a member of the KingCo 4A conference, was led by the sophomore backcourt tandem of Mike Hwang (13 points) and Brandon Lester (12 points) along with 6-foot-6 junior center Eric Holmdahl, who had 13 points.
Parker, a 6-7 senior, led all scorers with 19 points and senior guard Joey Roppo scored 13.
