Snohomish boys clinch 18th state soccer berth in last 20 years

SHORELINE — Felipe Cerna, Nathan Nicholson and Conner Smith scored for Snohomish in a 13-minute span to close the first half and the Panthers finished out a 3-1 win over Shorecrest on Tuesday night to advance to Saturday’s 3A District 1 championship game.

The Panthers (15-2) clinched their 18th state tournament berth in the last 20 seasons, and first under coach Matt Raney, with the win.

Snohomish will face Lynnwood in the district title game on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shoreline Stadium, while the Scots (8-6-4) will battle Edmonds-Woodway in an elimination game on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Noah Trostle bundled a ball over the line in the sixth minute for Shorecrest’s lone goal.

Shorecrest goalkeeper Ben Evans made several fine saves in the second half to keep it at 3-1, including a diving to his right to catch a bullet free kick from Nicholson in second-half stoppage time.
